Kicking off at 1pm on Saturday, April 4th, the SweetWater Brewing patio was already filling in for a day that felt bigger than a typical local brewery show. This Battle of the Bands Atlanta finale was the final push before SweetWater 420 Fest, and every band on that stage knew exactly what was on the line. Three bands, three completely different styles, and a crowd that felt connected from the start.
Recess Party opened the day coming off a long drive back from Charlotte, where they had played a tour stop the night before, and somehow still brought a loose, fun energy that immediately connected. Led by Riley Stillwagon alongside Sam Smith on bass, the band hit the stage all wearing custom Recess Party baseball jerseys, setting the tone before a single note was even played. It felt less like a competition set and more like a group of friends fully in their element, the kind of energy that defines the Atlanta music scene right now.

Mid-set, Stillwagon joked about a broken guitar string, saying the guitar might actually be cursed. At one point, Sam Smith talked about getting swarmed by carpenter bees earlier, with sawdust falling on her like snow, laughing it off and saying she loved being home. That kind of personality carried through the entire set, especially when they debuted a new track from their upcoming EP with a simple “here goes nothing.” Moments like that are what make live music in Atlanta feel personal and connected.

Kaya’s Embrace followed and ended up being the turning point of the day. As one of the standout Atlanta local bands, they had a strong hometown crowd behind them, and you could feel it immediately. They leaned into a reggae fusion sound that stood out from the start, blending groove-heavy rhythms with a laid back but confident delivery.

They opened with the Braves chop before easing into swaying, rhythm-driven sections that pulled the crowd in. This was not a band trying to win people over, this was a band that already had their people on the lawn and knew how to move them. The performance felt controlled, polished, and fully connected, and by the end of their set, it was clear they had made a serious case to win this Battle of the Bands Atlanta finale.

Montage closed out the day and brought a completely different energy. With a more alternative edge and a dedicated fanbase of their own, they leaned into a bigger, more produced sound. Backing tracks and added effects gave their set a different kind of weight compared to the first two bands, showing another side of what the Atlanta music scene has to offer.

They also took a moment to shout out both Recess Party and Kaya’s Embrace, even mentioning how strong the earlier sets were, which added a level of respect across the lineup. One of the standout moments came when they brought up a guest vocalist to perform “Heads Will Roll” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which pushed the energy even higher heading into the final stretch.

What made this finale stand out was how different each band felt. Recess Party brought personality and spontaneity. Kaya’s Embrace brought groove and a hometown connection that carried their entire set. Montage brought scale and production to close things out. No two performances overlapped, and that made this Atlanta live music showcase feel complete.
With Kaya’s Embrace taking the win and moving on to SweetWater 420 Fest, the bar is officially set. But honestly, no one walked away from this as a loser. Every band on that stage gained something, whether it was new fans, new momentum, or just proving they belong in the Atlanta local bands conversation.
