Reverend Horton Heat brought the noise to City Winery Atlanta on a rainy Wednesday night, turning the laid-back venue into a full-blown psychobilly party. The setup was small, the crowd was close, and the energy was high from the get go.
Things kicked off with Nathan & The Zydeco Cha Chas, who set the tone perfectly. Their blend of zydeco, blues, and soul pulled the room in right away. You could feel the whole place start to loosen up. The band was solid, the accordion was flying, and by the end of their set, they had the place warmed up and ready for the Rev.
Reverend Horton Heat hit the stage right after and wasted no time. Jim Heath, Jimbo Wallace, and Jonathan Jeter opened with “D for Dangerous” and “Dark Day” before rolling straight through “Big Sky,” “Baddest of the Bad,” “Rock & Roll is King,” and “Now, Right Now.” Heath’s guitar tone was crisp and loud, and he played like someone who never phones it in. Jimbo locked in on upright bass, steady and focused, while Jeter drove everything forward with his signature rockabilly drumming. There’s no flash with these guys, just straight-up chemistry and a setlist built to keep things moving.
They powered through “Let Me Teach You How to Eat,” “Big River,” “Galaxy 500,” and “Do I Love You” before getting into heavier stuff like “Devil’s Chasin’ Me,” “400 Bucks,” and “Psychobilly Freakout.” The band kept the energy up while also throwing in some jokes and stories between songs, which gave the whole night a personal, laid-back vibe. Even with most people seated, a few fans made their way up front to dance, and no one seemed to mind at all. The sound in the room was clean, loud, and surprisingly full for a winery setup. You could hear every detail without it being too polished.
After a short pause, they came back out for an encore closing strong with a killer cover of “Ace of Spades.” Heath absolutely tore through it, and the crowd was all in. It was the right way to end the night, loud and fast and rough around the edges.
Reverend Horton Heat still delivers one of the best live shows out there. Small room, big sound, no fluff. If they’re coming through your city, go. Bring earplugs and expect to leave smiling.
