Some shows carry history whether you plan on it or not. The first time I saw Lacuna Coil was back in 2003 when they opened for Type O Negative at the old Masquerade. That version of the venue had a darker, more raw feel. Coming into the current Masquerade in 2026, the space is different, but the connection to those earlier shows is still there, especially when a band like this comes through.

I missed the first opener of the night, but by the time Escape the Fate took the stage, the room was already filling in fast. The energy shifted quickly once they walked out. The floor pushed forward, the crowd tightened up, and people locked in.

Escape the Fate came out heavy and direct. Their set leaned into the stronger, more aggressive side of their sound while still hitting the songs fans were waiting for. Craig Mabbitt handled both clean vocals and heavier sections without losing control, keeping things steady from start to finish. The band moved quickly between songs and kept the pacing tight, which worked well in this room. By the end of their set, the crowd was fully engaged and ready for the headliner.

There’s something about a Lacuna Coil show that doesn’t just feel like a concert, it feels like stepping into a different space. On the Sleepless Empire Tour, that atmosphere leaned dark and immersive from the moment the lights dropped.

Opening with “Layers of Time,” they set the tone immediately. Deep red lighting washed across the stage while shadows stretched through the crowd before the full weight of the sound hit. Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro remain one of metal’s most effective vocal pairings. Scabbia’s voice cut clean and controlled through the mix, while Ferro added a grounded, heavier presence that balances everything out.

The setlist balanced newer material with longtime staples in a way that kept the pacing consistent. Songs like “Hosting the Shadow” and “Kill the Light” brought a heavier, modern edge, while “Spellbound” pulled the crowd into something familiar. When “Never Dawn” hit, the entire room felt connected, not just reacting, but fully invested.

What stands out most about Lacuna Coil right now is their control. Everything feels intentional. Transitions are clean, dynamics are dialed in, and nothing feels overplayed. The production followed that same approach. Lighting and atmosphere supported the music instead of distracting from it, keeping the focus exactly where it needed to be.

The Sleepless Empire Tour doesn’t try to reinvent the band, it reinforces why they’ve lasted this long. Heavy without losing melody, polished without feeling sterile, and immersive without excess. Lacuna Coil still feel sharp, focused, and completely in command of what they do.
