Jet and Band of Skulls Light Up The Tabernacle in a Night of Raw Rock Revival
On June 9, The Tabernacle in Atlanta hosted a night packed with heavy riffs, pounding rhythms, and no-frills rock and roll. Australian headliners Jet brought their signature swagger and singalong anthems to a full house, but not before Band of Skulls set the tone with a moody, groove-heavy performance that pulled the crowd in from the first note.
Band of Skulls, now led by founding guitarist and vocalist Russell Marsden, opened with a brooding, cinematic set that blended thick guitar tones, atmospheric flourishes, and blues-laced tension. Marsden’s guitar work was sharp and expressive, anchored by the deep, locked-in basslines of Spencer Page and the tight, driving rhythms of drummer Marc MacNab-Jack. Adding a new dimension to the band’s evolving sound was Iönä, whose haunting vocals and commanding presence gave the set a hypnotic pull. This wasn’t just a rehash of their earlier catalog. It was a reimagined Band of Skulls with fresh energy and a more immersive sound.
Songs like “Sweet Sour” and “The Devil Takes Care of His Own” felt heavier and more dynamic, reworked to match the current lineup’s chemistry. The band didn’t speak much between songs, but they didn’t need to. The music carried the weight, and kept the crowd mesmerized from the start to the final note.
Jet followed with a set that delivered everything fans hoped for. They opened with “Get What You Need” and didn’t let up from there. Nic Cester’s vocals were fierce and raw, cutting through the wall of guitars and pounding drums with power and control. Backed by his brother Chris Cester on drums and the rest of their seasoned lineup, Jet charged through hits like “Rollover DJ,” “She’s a Genius,” and “Look What You’ve Done.” They closed the main set with the explosive “Rip It Up,” and came back out to encore with a surprise cover of AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top.”
In between the big singles, they made room for deeper cuts and newer material that showed the band is still evolving. Tracks like “Black Hearts (On Fire),” “Hurry Hurry,” and “Take It or Leave It” gave the set plenty of texture, shifting between snarling rock and more melodic moments. The pacing was sharp, keeping the crowd hooked all the way through.
What stood out most was the connection between Jet and the crowd. This wasn't a nostalgia act; it was a band playing with purpose, drive, and tight chemistry. Every riff hit, every lyric was echoed back, and The Tabernacle was fully engaged. Atlanta got a real show and a reminder of what great live rock sounds like.
