Billy Idol’s return to music with Dream Into It, his first full-length album in over a decade, showcases his evolution as an artist. Unlike his previous endeavors, Idol embraces a relaxed and polished sound that seamlessly blends classic radio rock, pop-punk influences, and introspective balladry. This album is a testament to his enduring passion for music, even as he ages and gains wisdom.
The album opens with the upbeat and radio-friendly “Dream Into It,” setting the tone for the rest of the record. “Too Much Fun” exudes a playful and punky energy, while “People I Love” stands out as the most heartfelt and catchy moment.
Collaborations play a significant role throughout the album. “John Wayne” with Alison Mosshart is a cinematic highlight, blending Americana swagger with Steve Stevens’ signature guitar work. On the other hand, “77” with Avril Lavigne feels like a reach toward pop-punk that doesn’t quite land, while “Wildside” with Joan Jett is more safe than explosive.
At its core, Dream Into It is a celebration of Idol’s journey, a nostalgic reflection on his past and a glimpse into his new adventures. The production is clean and modern yet retains the grit that made Idol iconic. The album prioritizes vibe over radio hits, and it mostly succeeds in that regard.
While Dream Into It may not reach the heights of Idol’s most legendary records, it offers enough genuine moments to remind fans of his enduring relevance. It’s a comfortable and enjoyable listen, and if approached without expecting a reinvention, there’s much to appreciate.
